Have you ever wondered what a show done in the style of a 60’s film interlaced with the prop work of Thunderbirds? Now picture that style, and toss in the back drop of a very humorous rendition of World War 2. What you get is the fantastic Australian series called Danger 5.
Danger 5 is a comedy series about a group of operatives for the Allies, whose main objective is to kill Hitler. This objective of course never comes to a head and they are usually tasked in dealing with a crazy plan thought up by one of Hitler’s lackeys. These plans range from Nazi dinosaurs to an STD that causes people infected to become Nazi’s. It’s the way they present these plans, and how Danger 5 deals with them, that makes Danger 5 as hilarious as it is. Now let us meet Danger 5, shall we?
Jackson is your classic all-american soldier. Portrayed by series creator, David Ashby, Jackson is the member of Danger 5 who is always ready to thrown down. He’s got a crush on Ilsa.
Tucker is probably the most cautious member of the group. Portrayed by Sean James Murphy, Tucker is the Australian member of Danger 5. He falls in love with Claire and usually goes out of his way to protect her, even if it endangers the mission.
Claire is the British member of Danger 5. Portrayed by Amanda Simmons, Claire is the sensible one of the group. She tends to speak out during mission briefings only to be silenced by Colonel Chestbridge. Hitler has a crush on her.
Ilsa is the Russian member of Danger 5. Portrayed by Natasa Ristic, Ilsa is best described as your sterotypical serious Russian. Although Jackson has a crush on her, she rarely returns the feelings. Always smoking and drinks vodka.
Pierre is the French member of Danger 5 and is the team’s bartender and ladies man. Portrayed by Aldo Mignone in season 1 and Pacharo Mzembe season 2. His character changes in between seasons from bartender to musician. In season 1, he has the uncanny ability to obtain drink recipes from people he kills. In season 2, it changes from drinks to cassettes.
Colonel Chestbridge is the eagle headed leader of Danger 5. Portrayed by Tilman Vogler, Chestbridge is who gives out the missions at the beginning of each episode. His hobbies include telling Claire to shut up.
Then there is the main villain of the series, Adolf Hitler. That is to say a very satirical humorous version of Hitler. This one has plenty of crazy plans that keep Danger 5 on their feet.
Season 2 moves away from the backdrop of WW2, and moves to the awesome 80’s. The series follows suit with a change of production style. The show takes everything that made the 80’s the 80’s, and uses that to further Hitler’s evil plans to become immortal and take over the world. The times have changed and the characters have aged, although not as much you would think.
Each series is only 7 episodes each, as it usually is with British/Australian shows. Each episode runs 25-30 minutes, and is funny the entire time. The show is available on both Netflix and Hulu.
For those interested in the show. Here’s the trailer for both seasons.
